As the name implies, black hat SEO is the dark and dirty twin of regular ‘white hat’ SEO. In a nutshell, it involves bending and breaking the rules in order to gain advantages and rank high on search engine results.
The temptation to ‘go dark’ is great. Through various techniques, you’ll find that you’re able to rank high on search engines with a lot less effort, and even maximize the results that you obtain from those rankings.
So while it may take months for white hat SEO techniques to bear fruit, black hat SEO could instead offer you a quick and easy path to similar results!
But is it worth the risk?
Due to its nature, black hat SEO more or less contravenes the various guidelines that search engines issue to websites. Naturally it should go without saying that search engines in turn aren’t particularly happy to have their rules broken, and come down hard on websites that they find to have done so.
So if you’re getting involved in black hat SEO, you should understand that it is not something that’s going to help you in the long term. As soon as search engines find out what your website is up to – they’re going to either toss you in the sandbox (a ‘purgatory’ for websites that are suspected of wrong doing), or remove your listing entirely.
Most of the people who get involved in black hat SEO know this – and choose to accept it simply because they feel they’ll be able to make a hefty profit before they get found out. Sometimes, this is true.
That being said – sometimes it isn’t.
For beginners, getting involved in black hat SEO is particularly risky. Unless you know exactly what you’re doing and precisely how you intend to turn a profit, you could find that you end up with little or nothing to show for your efforts.
In other words: If you don’t strike while the iron is hot, you might not get the chance to strike at all!
On the flipside, with white hat SEO at least your efforts won’t just disappear overnight, and although it will take longer to see the results – that gives beginners time to fully plan out and cash in on the traffic that will eventually head their way.
If you’re considering venturing into black hat SEO, at least now you’ll be aware of the risks. Would you like to make a try for quick profits? Or would you rather build up a stable stream of income that will last you the long run?
All things said and done – the choice is entirely yours, and the risks are up to you to bear.
